Wiki Loves Folklore is back with a blast this year again in its fourth edition, inviting photographers and folklore lovers to join our folk soiree hosted on Wikimedia Commons. Wiki Loves Folklore is an annual themed photo and media contest focusing on the world’s folk culture. The contest is set to run from 1 February 2022 (00:01) – 28 February 2022 (23:59 UTC). Celebrating a unique and rich traditions and culture that make up a large proportion of the world’s intangible heritage of different regions and categories, such as, but not limited to, folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folklore, and tradition, including ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional song and dance, folk plays, games, seasonal events, calendar customs, folk arts, folk religion, mythology amongst others.

The contest calls out for photographers around the world to Wikimedia Commons, a media repository hosting images that are freely licensed for anyone to be used for any purpose, ensuring the world’s cultural heritage is documented and stored for future generations. In the past three years, over 27,000 media files of Folk have been shared on Wikimedia Commons under free license.

Participation is simple: grab your camera, take photos of folklore, or featuring culture related work then upload your photos to Wikimedia Commons. You will both help increase the internet content on intangible heritage  and have a chance to win.

Or better yet, if you already have the images stored on your computer, mobile, hard disk, or pendrive, now would be a perfect time to get them out and celebrate your local culture by sharing it with the world in this contest.

We welcome you to organize the Wiki Loves Folklore photography campaign in your country or simply organize photo walks with your local walks. For signing up, please visit our page on Wikimedia Commons and for more personalized support, you can contact us at support@wikilovesfolklore.org and one of our team coordinators or communications specialist will get in touch with you for a google meet or online support.

We also bring exciting opportunities for Wikimedia Affiliates and local non profits to partner with us to organize the local campaign in their respective regions. Individual volunteers are also welcome to join the biggest annual celebration of folklore and volunteer in international team. We welcome your ideas and recommendations for the campaign. Write us at support@openheritagefoundation.org with your ideas.

Stay tuned for more upcoming posts about Wiki Loves Folklore.
